A Pioneering Book On Community Management

BINESH BABU PANICKER CATCHES UP WITH PROF. JEEVAN D’MELLO TO REVEAL DETAILS ABOUT HIS UPCOMING COFFEE TABLE BOOK IN COLLABORATION WITH PROPERTY TIME.

What can readers expect from your upcoming book?

I’m planning a definitive book on community management’s origins and evolution in Dubai and the UAE. It will trace how a fledgling profession grew into a global model, spotlighting the pioneers, policies and practices that transformed our neighbourhoods into world-class communities.

Why is now the perfect time for a definitive guide on community management?

Information on community management is scattered. Many still believe it’s just fixing taps or air-cons, but it’s so much more. This book will be the one platform—online and in print—where anyone can learn every facet of the industry, from governance to lifestyle curation.

What core topics will you cover?

I’ll explain how developers shifted from handing over keys to owning a lifestyle ethos. We’ll explore common areas, recreation spaces, safety, security and maintenance. Readers will see how robust community management can sustain and even increase property values.

Who will feature in this book?

I want to showcase regulators, developers, early practitioners and service providers—landscapers, janitors, technicians—anyone who brought the industry to life. Their stories, techniques and hard-won lessons will bring the profession’s heartbeat onto the page.

How will you structure it?

The book will blend thematic chapters—leadership, people management, technical best practices—with first-person anecdotes. Each chapter closes with bite-sized tips and tricks we used to position Dubai at the top of the world for community management.

Will it be a global book or just about Dubai?

Though born in Dubai, it’s for the world. I’ve served as global president of the Community Associations Institute and I’ve seen every continent’s spin on this craft. I’ll compare Dubai’s best-of-best practices with those from the USA, Europe, Far East and South America.

Why partner with PROPERTY TIME?

PROPERTY TIME has championed Dubai real estate since 2012 and is a pioneering media brand. When I thought of a partner, there was no question—it’s an honor to co-author with the most trusted voice in the market.

What legacy do you aim to preserve?

This book is a gift to the 3,500 community managers I’ve trained and to the thousands more who followed. It will enshrine the pioneering spirit of everyone who helped define our industry—so future generations carry forward our shared legacy.

How does community management differ from facilities management?

Facilities management fixes infrastructure and maintains the technical aspects of the community. Community Management manages the common property of the owners, orchestrates people, places and processes. This profession serves owners, tenants and service providers, weaving them into a cohesive lifestyle tapestry rather than merely changing lightbulbs or repairing pumps.

Can you share one early memory that ignited your journey?

When we handed over keys to Dubai’s first freehold community, I asked my boss who would manage it. To my great surprise he pointed to me. I googled “community management,” discovered the Community Associations Institute in the US, convinced him to send me for training, and never looked back.

Which law underpins your profession?

Law 27 of 2007 formalized community management in the UAE and Law 06 of 2019 revolutionised it. But beyond legislation, this book will celebrate the hands-on people who made that law work—the visionaries, regulators and on-the-ground teams who turned legal text into vibrant, well-maintained environments.

How will you engage today’s younger managers?

Print will capture the emotional depth and photographs of the pioneers, but I want a living document too. We’ll create podcasts, short documentaries, social-media snippets, even an interactive AI chatbot, so new talent can hear our founders’ voices and ask questions in real time.

Where do you go from here and when can we expect it?

The manuscript is already alive in my head. I’ll start interviews next month—connecting with fellow pioneers, regulators and fresh talent. Once we draft chapters and visuals, we’ll design the print edition and build the digital companion. I’m aiming for a mid-2026 launch, global distribution.

Any final thoughts for PROPERTY TIME readers?

This is more than a book. It’s our collective story—the foundation of a profession that shapes lives, property values and urban landscapes. To every community manager reading this, thank you for carrying the torch. Together, we’ll ensure our legacy lights the way for generations to come.
