What Makes Or Breaks Your Business In Interior Design And Construction?

BY RAJI DAOU, CEO, DMDC

When people hear the words interior design, their minds usually drift towards elegant spaces, harmonious palettes, and eye-catching finishes. Mention construction and the conversation shifts to floor plans, structural integrity, and durability.

These associations aren’t wrong. But they miss the one element that quietly underpins everything we do: quality.

Quality is the backbone of our industry. It’s the difference between a space that merely looks good and one that truly works, lasts, and elevates. Technically speaking, quality is the degree to which a product, service, or process meets or exceeds established standards and expectations.

But in practice, it’s much more than that. It’s durability, craftsmanship, functionality, safety, sustainability, and, most importantly, client satisfaction. And here’s the truth: quality goes far beyond what meets the eye.

Those of us in the field are facing a new kind of challenge. Today’s clients aren’t just dazzled by surface-level beauty. They’re becoming more informed and discerning. They want interiors that endure, materials that matter, and designs that serve a purpose.

Quality, whether in construction, furniture, or spatial planning, is the new aesthetic.

Recent data backs this up. A SuperSurvey of interior design clients found that satisfaction is more closely tied to how well a design meets functional needs than how stylish it looks. Clients rated “functionality” and “material durability” higher than “style” when asked what influenced their satisfaction most.

There’s also a review in the NICMAR Journal of Construction Management which emphasises that quality assurance and control are now central to consumer expectations. And with the global market for green building materials projected to hit Dh5.25 trillion by 2026, it’s clear that people are investing in eco-friendly, high-performance solutions that offer both longevity and design flexibility.

So how do we maintain quality in a fast-paced, high-demand industry?

At DMDC, we ask ourselves this question often. We source only the finest materials, conduct rigorous snagging processes, and ensure every client gets exactly what they signed up for. But we’ve learned that quality often slips through the cracks in the smallest details – the ones that are easiest to overlook and hardest to control.

That’s why we inaugurated our own in-house joinery facility. It’s a 20,000 square foot space where our team can oversee every cut, every finish, and every joint.

It’s not just about control, it’s about accountability. When you build something yourself, you build it better.

Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. I do, however, believe more companies should take proactive steps to own their quality processes. Yes, it’s a bigger investment. But it’s one that clients notice, appreciate, and remember. And in a market as competitive as ours, that kind of reputation is priceless.

One thing I’m certain of: quality will continue to be the first thing clients look for. It’s what separates good design from great design. It’s what ensures a space stands the test of time. And for those of us committed to excellence, it’s our job to stay ahead of the curve and exceed expectations every step of the way.
